How do you solve dry eye problems?

How do you solve dry eye problems?

If you’re experiencing eye soreness and irritation, it could be a condition called dry eye syndrome, caused by a blockage or dysfunction of the oil glands along the edge of your eyelids, located near your eyelashes.

The oil glands are known as the Meibomian Glands. The oil in these glands, mixed with water and mucus make up your tears. Each time you blink, a film of tears covers your eyes. This enables clear vision and stops your eyes from drying out.

Expert Assessment

Typical symptoms of dry eye syndrome can be very similar to a host of other conditions, some of which can be more serious and impossible to diagnose, without professional advice.

Dry eye syndrome can sometimes be linked to rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, thyroid disease, Sjögren’s syndrome, blepharitis (red/swollen eyelids), entropion (eyelids turned inwards) and ectropion (eyelids turned outwards).

An experienced optometrist can conduct a thorough evaluation to diagnose the underlying causes of your dry eye symptoms accurately.

They will be able to test the quality and thickness of your tears. They may also measure how quickly you produce tears and check how you blink.

Dry Eye Syndrome Symptoms

  • Typical dry eye symptoms include the following:
  • Stinging eyes
  • Feeling like you have something in your eye
  • Burning eyes
  • Blurred vision, often when reading
  • Itching eyes
  • Gritty eyes
  • Eyes that keep on watering
  • Red eyes
  • Pain when wearing contact lenses
  • Eyelids stuck together when you wake up

What Causes Dry Eye?

Certain environments can cause dry eye syndrome or make it worse.

These may include:

  • Windy weather
  • Dry environments with low humidity
  • Smoky environments

In addition to environments, other aspects of your lifestyle or health could be causing it too. Some examples of these are shown below.

  • Eye surgery (for example LASIK)
  • A side effect from medications
  • Long periods of screen use
  • Wearing contact lenses for a long time
  • Other medical conditions
  • Changes in hormones, including pregnancy and the menopause

Age can also be a factor, particularly in patients aged over 65 years old. Over time, the oil in the glands starts to run out or isn’t produced as efficiently as before. In this situation, the patient may regularly need a tissue to dab their eyes, because naturally the eye keeps producing more tears to try to make up for the missing oil.

Unfortunately, Dry Eye Syndrome is highly unlikely to improve without treatment.

Treatment for Dry Eye Syndrome

After diagnosis of the condition, a qualified and experienced optometrist will be able to recommend a personalised treatment plan to ease the symptoms.

This may include a variety of actions, dependent upon the cause, the severity of symptoms and what will work best for your circumstances. The solution could be as simple as eye drops or artificial tears.

Typical treatments and recommendations may include:

  • Artificial tears.
  • Prescription eye drops or medications.
  • Avoiding hair dryers
  • A change of glasses style to protect your eyes when you’re outdoors.
  • Using a humidifier.
  • Adding supplements or food types to your diet.
  • If appropriate, or necessary, a referral to an eye specialist.
